Hilary Pecis Bio & Artist Statement
In my work I use shards from glossy magazine pages, reassembled to remove the familiar Pseudo Events that take place within the advertisement, and then repositioned into a surrogate image within my drawing. Application of collage and craft glitter in the construction of these works offer a non-preciousness and familiarity for the viewer. Codes in both the striations of the landmasses as well as the programmed spectacle from the magazine pages narrate and exhibit the (what will eventually be) historic information of the current civilization. Centuries of information are fractured and displayed throughout the archeologically complex layers found within these structures. Much of my work employs the space that exists between the drawing and the viewer with the use of mirrors, thus luring the viewer even closer and finally into the drawing by introducing their ever-changing reflection. The illusory landscapes are inspired by geodesic designs as well as the continual whisper of the apocalypse. I find myself in a trancelike experience while producing these drawings, removing myself from my surroundings and presenting a foretelling of the world in which I reside.
My drawings have brought recognition through a variety of exhibitions including the 2006 San Francisco GenArts Emerge show, The West Coast Windows show at Samson Projects in Massachusetts and the Marfa Salon in Marfa Texas, as well as shows in Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Hamburg Germany. Most recently my work was selected for inclusion in the Alumni at the Centennial show, representing the variety of California College of the Arts alumni work from the past hundred years. As a California resident my drawings were selected for publication in the New American Paintings #67 issued in December 2006. I am currently working on my Masters Degree at California College of the Arts.
