Michelle Blade Artist Statement

Working within painting, sculpture and social practice my work evinces a unifying interest in the natural world and the human condition. I’m interested in building a practice based on exploration and questioning, and I’m looking toward history, philosophy, spirituality, nature, anthropology and common culture as both inspiration and fodder.

My current body of work focuses on moments where social hierarchy dissolves and quick moments of collective accomplishments occur in heightened natural surroundings. The images I create are imbued with transcendent experiences, filled with fireworks, piercing light, explosions, and natural phenomena. They are investigations into the magic of these moments, tinged with a hint of sorrow for their brevity and eventual disintegration, a push and pull between a utopic and dystopic content. The reality of these works oscillate between a past which has seen the accomplishments and failures in movements toward collectivity and equality, and a present filled with hope and disillusionments for a promising future.

My performance, installation and sculptural work function as a bridge to the subject matter my paintings. By hosting a public group hug or organizing a human domino in the shape of a peace sign during an anti war rally, I am acknowledging my societal yearnings while also fostering their physical manifestation. This parallel practice serves as vital research for my studio practice. I am currently interested in what ways social interaction can formally complete a painting. How can an invitation to step onto a painting of a magic carpet, or throw a coin on to a painting of a wishing well create a dialog about the social function of painting?
