Kottie Paloma bio

I make work about the everyday aspects of life. Social and personal politics are my main subjects. Whether I am working with the figure, an abstract tape and paper collage, books, photography, video, or soft sculpture; there is always an element of the every day bullshit that we humans have to deal with today.

Personal Background Story

I was born November 12th, 1975 as Christopher Lee Goldman. I am the youngest son to Kathy and Hank Goldman, sibling to Jim Goldman. I was born in Los Angeles in the same hospital as my father. I was raised in a modest house in Huntington Beach, California. My dad was a very unappreciated community college professor. He converted from Judaism when I was about four or five years old and is now a priest. Mom worked as a travel agent from 1986-2006. She was a college drop out and tried to hide it from her parents. I followed in her footsteps and actually dropped out of college twice, it was the best thing I did. My parents collect art when they can afford to do so. Mostly they purchase Mother Wells and Calder prints. They are in love with abstract expressionists as much as they are with each other. Their marriage has lasted nearly forty-five years and counting. Growing up in Huntington Beach was fun. I learned all about surfing, skating, punk rock, republicans, racism, and getting your ass beat by the cops for drinking a beer on your porch on a sunny afternoon!

On August 18th, 1996 I moved to San Francisco, I was twenty-one years old. In 1999, after a great road trip to LA, my friend Trevor Robinson re-named me Kottie Paloma. To this day, I don’t know where the name Kottie comes from but I guess Paloma is about Picasso’s daughter. It was supposed to be a joke but it stuck. Ever since, I have been known as Kottie Paloma, Kottie P., KK or my all time favorite Kotts!
